Volcker this week declared that worldwide manufacturing declines were uniform and unprecedented. This is not a surprise if you have been paying attention to the numbers reported from the sector since December.

Today however comes news that SAAB filed for protection in Sweden; GM apparently couldn’t keep it afloat and cut it loose. Evidence of the interconnected problems we face through globalization. Shared benefits, shared risk.

Coupled with the problems American auto manufacturing is experiencing, it isn’t unreasonable to conclude that a new manufacturing model will take shape. China and Asia, already positioned to build cheap and quick should be watched to take the lead in this area.
